Overview

About KPT

The legal entity behind KPT is “KPT Krankenkasse AG” (legal form: company limited by shares (AG), UID CHE-112.983.842), based in Bern. The FOPH register does not assign the insurer to any insurance group. The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) lists the insurer under number 376 in its register of approved health insurers, as of 01.01.2026. The register gives its area of operation as “CH; EU, EFTA, UK”. In basic health insurance, KPT must accept every person there who is required to take out insurance, without a health questionnaire, and the benefits are the same at every insurer under the Health Insurance Act (KVG/LAMal).

In the 2024 financial year, an average of 546,003 people had basic health insurance with KPT. That is 6.1% of the 9,005,998 insured persons across all insurers. These figures come from the FOPH supervisory data (table T 5.01), which are published every year for all health insurers. Per insured person, the insurer took in an average of CHF 4,287 in premiums in 2024 and paid out CHF 3,982 in net benefits.

For 2026, KPT has approved premiums in 26 of 26 cantons. As the reference for the premium level, we use adults in the standard model with a CHF 300 deductible and accident cover. Across all of the insurer’s premium regions, this gives an index of 100.3, where 100 is the unweighted average of all insurers in the same regions. That is almost exactly the average. Compared with the respective cantonal average, the lowest index is in the canton of Zug (92.1) and the highest in the canton of Neuchâtel (108.4).

Between 2011 and 2026, this reference premium at KPT changed, on average across its own premium regions, from CHF 338.31 to CHF 590.17 per month (+74.4%). Over the same period, the average of all insurers in the same regions went from CHF 343.85 to CHF 587.43 (+70.8%). The chart further down shows the trend year by year.

In 2026, KPT offers 3 model types: standard model (free choice of physicians), GP and HMO models and telemedicine and other models, with 6 tariffs in total, for example “KPTwin.doc” and “KPTwin.easy”. Models with a restricted choice of service provider often apply only in certain regions; the premium calculator for your municipality shows whether a tariff is offered where you live.

In 2024, administrative costs came to CHF 190 per insured person (all insurers: CHF 193). The claims ratio, i.e. net benefits in relation to premiums, was 92.9% (all insurers: 94.9%). Reserves amounted to CHF 265.2 million, or CHF 486 per insured person. In the KVG solvency test as of 01.01.2025, KPT achieved a solvency ratio of 108%; the required minimum is 100%, while the figure for all insurers was 147%.

You cancel basic health insurance in writing. To switch on 1 January, your notice of cancellation must reach KPT by 30 November (Art. 7 para. 2 HIA); the FOPH recommends sending it by registered mail by 15 November. The insurer’s website gives a separate cancellation address for this, which you’ll find further down. Which insurer is cheaper for you depends on where you live, your age, your deductible and your model. This page shows official figures without rating; you can work out your personal premiums in the premium calculator.

Background

Why the solvency ratio matters

The solvency ratio shows whether an insurer’s reserves are sufficient to bear the risks of a bad year (KVG solvency test under the Health Insurance Supervision Act, KVAG). At 100%, the required minimum reserves are just in place; below that, the insurer must take action, for example by raising premiums.

In August 2025, the FOPH declared the insurer KLuG (Zug, around 9,300 insured persons) insolvent and withdrew its licence as of 31.12.2025. In the KVG solvency test as of 01.01.2025, its solvency ratio was 69%. The insolvency fund of the Common Institution under the Federal Health Insurance Act took over outstanding benefits; insured persons were able to switch or were taken over by Helsana.

Frequently asked questions

Is KPT a good health insurer?

In basic health insurance, the benefits are set by law and are the same at every insurer. The differences lie in the premium, the models, the service and financial stability. The official figures for KPT: solvency ratio 108% as of 01.01.2025 (minimum 100%, all insurers 147%), administrative costs of CHF 190 per insured person in 2024 (all insurers CHF 193) and premium index 2026 of 100.3 (100 = average of all insurers in the same regions). We do not give an overall grade; which insurer suits you depends on where you live, your deductible and your model.

How much are KPT premiums in 2026?

That depends on the canton, premium region, age, deductible, accident cover and model. For adults in the standard model with a CHF 300 deductible and accident cover, the monthly premiums at KPT in 2026 range from CHF 401.00 to CHF 773.50, depending on where you live. The premium calculator shows your exact premium for all models.

How do I cancel my basic insurance with KPT?

In writing, by letter. Your notice must reach the insurer by 30 November to take effect on 1 January (Art. 7 para. 2 HIA); the FOPH recommends sending it by registered mail by 15 November. Address: KPT Krankenkasse AG, Postfach, 3001 Bern (cancellation address per the insurer’s website). Your old insurance only ends once the new insurer has accepted you.

How can I contact KPT?

phone +41 58 310 91 11, email kpt@kpt.ch, post to KPT Krankenkasse AG, Wankdorfallee 3, Postfach, 3001 Bern and website www.kpt.ch. Opening hours (Customer service): Monday to Thursday, 8 am–12 noon and 1.30–5 pm; Friday, 8 am–12 noon and 1.30–4 pm. These details come from the insurer’s official website, retrieved on 25.09.2026. For cancellations, use the address in the cancellation section.

How solvent is KPT?

In the FOPH’s KVG solvency test as of 01.01.2025, KPT achieved a solvency ratio of 108%. The law requires at least 100%: at that level, the reserves cover the risks of a bad year. The figure for all insurers combined was 147%. The insolvency of the insurer KLuG in 2025 showed why this matters.
