How the calculator works

  1. Place of residence: you enter a postcode or town. What counts is the municipality, because it determines the premium region. If a postcode covers several municipalities, you choose yours.
  2. People: year of birth, deductible and accident cover per person, up to 8 people per household. No names, no health questions.
  3. Results: all insurers and models with a tariff in your municipality, sorted by premium. Nothing is pre-filtered, no placement is paid for.
  4. Decide: compare total costs in the scenario, set your current insurer as a reference or share the link.

The calculation is based on the premiums of all insurers approved by the FOPH (“Health insurance premiums” dataset on opendata.swiss), the premium regions under the FDHA ordinance (SR 832.106) and the official register of localities from swisstopo. Details under How we calculate.

What the total cost means

The premium is only part of your costs. On top of it comes the co-payment: first the deductible, then a 10% retention fee up to a maximum of CHF 700 per year (children CHF 350). Total cost = 12 × monthly premium + deductible share + retention fee (Art. 64 HIA, Art. 103 KVV). The calculator shows it in three scenarios: healthy CHF 500, medium CHF 3,000, high CHF 15,000 of healthcare costs per year.

Co-payment of an adult per year (excluding the premium), calculated under Art. 64 HIA and Art. 103 KVV

DeductibleHealthy (CHF 500)Medium (CHF 3,000)High (CHF 15,000)
CHF 300CHF 320CHF 570CHF 1,000
CHF 1,500CHF 500CHF 1,650CHF 2,200
CHF 2,500CHF 500CHF 2,550CHF 3,200

Total costs are only directly comparable between insurers at the same deductible. That is why the “Best deductible for me” mode picks, for each insurer and model, the deductible with the lowest total cost. Not included is the hospital contribution of CHF 15 per day in hospital (Art. 64 para. 5 HIA, Art. 104 KVV): it is the same with every insurer.

Frequently asked questions about comparing premiums

When will the 2027 health insurance premiums be known?

The FOPH publishes the approved 2027 premiums on 29.09.2026 at 14:00. From then on, this calculator uses the new premiums; before that, it uses the 2026 premiums with a notice. Your insurer must inform you of the new premium at least two months before the start of the year.

Which health insurer is the cheapest?

That depends on your municipality of residence (premium region), your age group, the deductible, the model and accident cover. The same basic insurance costs different amounts with different insurers in the same municipality. The calculator shows all insurers in your municipality, sorted by premium, and marks the cheapest.

Until when can I switch health insurer?

To switch on 1 January, your notice of cancellation for basic insurance must reach your current insurer by 30 November; the postmark does not count. The new insurer must accept you without health questions. With the standard deductible in the standard model, you can also switch at the end of June (notice by 31 March).

When is the CHF 2,500 deductible worth it?

When your healthcare costs stay low. For the higher deductible, the insurer grants a premium discount of at most 70% of the additional risk; at CHF 2,500, that is at most CHF 1,540 per year. In return, you pay up to CHF 2,200 more of the costs yourself. The “Best deductible for me” mode calculates this for every insurer.

Do I have to give information about my health or gender?

No. In basic insurance, the premium depends neither on your health nor on your gender, and every insurer must accept you. That is why the calculator only asks for place of residence, year of birth, deductible and accident cover. You see the results without an e-mail address or phone number.

Does die-krankenkasse.ch earn anything from my switch?

If you switch directly with the insurer, we earn nothing. If you take out a policy through FinanceRock, the insurer pays a fee: at most CHF 70 per person for basic health insurance, at most 16 monthly premiums for supplementary insurance. The advice is free for you; the ranking in the comparison is never influenced by it.
